Why Melbourne Drivers Get Paint Correction Done

Swirl marks, fine scratches, and water spot etching do not go away on their own. Every car wash, every drive through a car park, every time someone wipes a dusty panel with a dry rag adds more damage to your clear coat. Over time that builds up into paint that looks dull, hazy, and old even when the car is clean.

Paint correction removes that damage mechanically. A machine polisher works a cutting compound across the clear coat, levelling the surface so light reflects evenly again. The result is paint that looks the way it did before years of use caught up with it.

Beyond appearance, corrected paint holds a coat of ceramic or wax far better than damaged paint does. If you are planning to protect your car long term, correction first is the right call. It also directly affects resale value. Buyers notice dull paint before they notice anything else.

The Paint Correction Process

1

Wash and Decontamination

The car gets a full hand wash followed by an iron remover treatment to pull out embedded metal particles from the paint and wheels. A clay bar then removes bonded surface contamination like tar, tree sap residue, and industrial fallout that a wash alone leaves behind. Starting on truly clean paint means the polishing stage works on actual defects, not surface grime.

2

Paint Inspection and Defect Assessment

Under inspection lighting, the full panel surface is checked for swirl marks, random deep scratches, water spot etching, oxidation, and buffer trails. A paint depth gauge confirms how much clear coat is available to work with. This determines which correction tier suits the car and where extra attention is needed.

15 to 20 mins
3

Machine Polishing

Each panel is worked section by section using a dual-action or rotary polisher with the appropriate compound and pad combination for the defect level. Cutting stages remove the damage by levelling the clear coat. Finishing stages refine the surface and bring up the gloss. IPA wipe-downs between stages show the true correction result without product masking.

2 to 6 hours depending on tier and vehicle size
4

Final Panel Wipe and Gloss Check

Every polished panel gets a full IPA wipe to strip any remaining polish oils and reveal the true finish underneath. The paint is then inspected under lighting again to confirm defect removal levels and check for any areas that need a second pass before protection goes on.

Protection Application

Corrected paint is raw clear coat with nothing between it and the environment. A finishing wax, sealant, or ceramic coating is applied straight away to lock in the result and protect the surface going forward. If ceramic coating is the next step, the car is handed back prepped and ready for that application.

Paint Correction FAQ

PRX Auto Detailing offers three tiers of correction: Single Stage, Two Stage, and Multi-Stage. The right tier depends on your paint condition, vehicle size, and what level of correction you are after. Get in touch with a few photos of your car and Noah will give you an accurate quote based on what it actually needs.
A Single Stage correction on a standard-sized car typically takes four to six hours including wash and decontamination. A Two Stage job runs six to eight hours. Multi-Stage correction on heavily defected paint can take a full day or longer. Vehicle size and paint condition both affect the time required.
The correction itself is permanent in the sense that removed defects do not come back on their own. New swirl marks can develop over time with poor washing habits, which is why a quality sealant or ceramic coating applied after correction is important. With proper maintenance, your corrected paint can stay looking sharp for years.
Avoid automatic car washes entirely as the brushes introduce new swirl marks almost immediately. Hand washing with a quality wash mitt and a two-bucket method is the standard approach. A pH-neutral car wash shampoo keeps any sealant or coating intact. Top up your paint protection every six to twelve months if you are running a wax or sealant rather than ceramic.
Noah stands behind his work. If you are not satisfied with the result, get in touch straight after the job and it will be sorted out. The correction removes defects down to what the clear coat depth allows. Any scratch that has gone through the clear coat and into base coat or primer cannot be fully removed by polishing and this is flagged during the inspection stage before work begins.
A cut and polish from a detailing shop or service station typically uses a one-size-fits-all product and a random orbital with minimal prep. It may reduce swirl marks but rarely eliminates them and often introduces new ones. Paint correction from PRX is a systematic, multi-stage process using the right compound and pad combination for your specific paint type and defect level, with proper decontamination before and protection applied after.
Yes, and it is the correct order of operations. Ceramic coating locks in whatever condition the paint is in when it goes on. If the paint has swirl marks and scratches, the coating preserves them. Correcting first means the coating is sealing in a clean, glossy finish. The combination of correction plus ceramic coating is the most effective thing you can do for your car's long-term appearance and resale value.
PRX currently services Plenty, Eltham, Doncaster, Templestowe, Airport West, Essendon, Niddrie, Strathmore, Epping, and Greensborough. If you are nearby and not on that list, get in touch anyway. Noah can confirm whether your area is covered.
